Seabrook Trip Report: Part I
Apr 20th, 2007 by Mark Scalia
So with classes now over, my friend Josh and I decided to try out a card room that I had seen an ad for in the newspaper. It was about 45 minutes away from Boston at the Seabrook Greyhound Park in New Hampshire. The place was a lot better than I was expecting (still obviously nothing compared to Foxwoods), but overall it ended up be a disappointing trip.
We got there at around 3:45 and signed up for a $50 tournament that would be starting at 5. Since there was more than an hour to kill I decided to play a little bit of cash games. Unfortunately in New Hampshire there is a law against there being cash games greater than 1-2 LIMIT, so that is what I sat down to play. It didn’t take me a long time to remember why I hated to play Limit Hold’em…
I sat down at the table with $40 since I wasn’t expecting to play for a very long time and the very first hand I’m in the big blind with Q-J of spades. About 5 people saw the flop with no raise and the flop came Q-8-2 rainbow. There were a couple checks to me and I bet (only bet I could) $2. Two other players called. The turn came another 8. It went check-check and I again bet $2. The next player then made it $4 and the other player called. Since it was quite apparent to me that at least one of them had an 8 I folded. The river came a K. The first player bet the $2 then the second player made it $4 then the first player made it $6 and the second player capped to $8. The first player flipped over 8-4 for a set of 8s and the second player much to my surprise flipped over K-K for a rivered full-house. No pre-flop raise or raise on the flop with K-K…nice.
I wasn’t really involved for about the next 10 mins when I’m dealt 7-5 of spades in the big blind. 3 people limp and a player raises. I call the extra $2 and so do the other 3 players. The flop is huge for me as it comes 4-6-8 with two spades. I decide to check and a player bets $2, another raises and ANOTHER re-raises all before it gets back to me. I decide to cap it and 2 other players call. The turn is a jack of spades. I check, one player bets, other player folds and I raise. The player calls. At this point I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have a flush because I feel like he would have re-raised me on the turn if he did. The river was a bad one as the 2 of spades came, putting 4 spades on the board now. I checked, he bet the $2 and I reluctantly called and he showed me A-K with the ace of spades…So to recap he called with ace high on a capped flop, and needed runner runner spades to win which he got. After that I decided to get up and just wait around and cool off before the tourney…
